What's the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Both play crucial roles, but here's the short version:

Psychologists focus on therapy and behavioural change. They use evidence based techniques like CBT and ACT to help you develop new ways of thinking and coping.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and often take a more medical approach.

At Salvado, if you’re seeing both, your psychologist and psychiatrist can work closely together—so your care stays coordinated and aligned.

Can I do telehealth from home?
Absolutely. Our psychologists, psychiatrists, and MHGPs offer phone or video appointments through our secure Oqea platform. We'll send you a link at the time of your scheduled appointment.

Prescription Management

Need a refill on stimulant medication?
Your medication can be reviewed and renewed at your next appointment with your psychiatrist or MHGP. Don't have one booked? Call us during office hours to schedule the soonest available slot


Important to know:
Early script releases aren't guaranteed. Requesting a new script too early, or attending an appointment before your refill is due can trigger Health Department authority rejections and delays. Plan ahead when you can.

Stimulant medication includes Vyvanse, Dexamphetamine, Ritalin, and Concerta. 

Running out before your next appointment?
Call us to check availability for an urgent appointment with one of our mental health GPs (if eligible), or see your regular GP. They may be able to review and renew your prescription.

Medication stolen?

Send us an email with your pharmacist's advice and the pharmacy's contact details, we'll do our best to help sort it out

Payment & Rebates

How does payment work?
As a private practice, payment is due on the day of your appointment. For convenience, we use automated payments—your card is charged about an hour after your appointment.


If your account is covered by a third party (like DVA or ICWA), we still need your card details on file for services they don't cover—like late cancellation fees or appointments without a valid referral. You won't be charged for covered appointments.


Can I claim Medicare rebates?

Yes. If you're eligible (with a valid GP referral or Mental Health Care Plan), your Medicare rebate is processed automatically after payment.

Want to update your card details?
Just call or email reception, we'll send you a secure form to update your information.


What if my card declines?

Reception will reach out directly to sort out payment. Please note: we can't book future appointments if you have outstanding accounts.


Where are my card details stored?

Your payment information is securely processed and stored by Stripe, a PCI-compliant payment processor (the highest security certification in the industry). No staff members at Salvado can see your full card details.

Cancellations

What's your cancellation policy?
Life happens, we get it. But because appointment slots are limited, we need at least 48 hours notice for cancellations.

Late cancellations (less than 48 hours) or missed appointments incur:

Therapy sessions: Full fee

Assessment sessions:  $500 inc GST

Psychiatry & MHGP sessions: Typically half fee (at practitioner's discretion) These fees aren't refundable through Medicare, DVA, or private health insurance.

Appointment reminders:
We'll send SMS reminders and verbal referral reminders as a courtesy, but it's still your responsibility to track appointments and referral expiry dates. Set personal reminders to avoid disappointment.
