Anxiety
Anxiety shares the title of most 'common psychiatric disorder' with depression. Anxiety really just means worry, and for most of us anxiety or worrying about things, is a useful thing. It helps protect us from threats in the environment, and stops us from doing dangerous or reckless things like running across the road without looking.
However, anxiety or worry can get out of hand, and come to take over our lives, leading us to live in constant dread or fear. Quite how a useful survival trait like worry transforms itself into a paralysing disorder causing immense suffering and disability is not entirely clear.
At a thinking level our ’threat perception and evaluation’ system seems to go wrong, and we start to see threat at every turn, or our response to really little threats becomes massively exaggerated. Worry also translates into bodily symptoms such as a fast heart beat, tremor, feeling sick or short of breath, and we struggle to concentrate and make good choices.
Although there are many forms of anxiety disorder - phobias (fear of specific things or situations), general and social anxiety, and related disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder, the treatments tend to be quite similar, focusing on both the body and the mind, combining talking and medicine, as well as neurostimulation and lifestyle/ environmental changes. Through teamwork and empowerment, anxiety can be ‘put back into its box’ and we can learn to resume control of our fears and turn our mind to self discovery and our future.
Knowledge is an unending adventure at the edge of uncertainty.
